A horrible thing happens when your baby gets all grown up and goes off to kindergarten, all day long. Suddenly, the child with whom you're used to spending practically all waking moments (all the while counting down those moments until bedtime!) is off having a day without you. It's a leap of faith to turn over their little world to teachers, new friends and long hard days of learning! I can't believe Megan is nearly done with her kindergarten year! It went way too fast. She's rounding out the year with a new maturity and confidence that has been so rewarding to witness. She's a friend to everyone in her class, a hard worker (who sometimes get a little distracted!) and a sensitive soul.
We've loved every (very rare!) opportunity to step into her classroom to help out or attend a special event, and her most recent Author's Day was no exception. All of the parents gathered to watch as each child took a turn in the chair at the front of the classroom, microphone in hand, to read aloud. They each selected their favorite of the books they have "authored" this year. Apparently, Megan has taken the writing of these books very seriously. She wrote more books than anyone else in her class, so she had quite a selection to choose from. She ended up reading her fiction book, The Princess and the Dragon, while the corresponding pages appeared on the smart board behind her for everyone to see.
Now, I don't want to brag or anything, but...I will anyway. Megan's book was, far and away, the most complex, wordy, and detailed book presented all day. I'm just being honest when I say she is obviously brilliant :) See for yourself.
And pay special attention to the dedication page below.
There was a collective "Awww!" from the audience when Megan read that, since most of the parents know exactly who Mary is. And, Megan's was the only book dedicated to a sibling. I need a stronger word than "explode" to describe what my heart did when I saw that!
Maybe genius isn't an entirely accurate description of this work. I mean, there are some plot problems and some tense issues, but I still think it's pretty solid for a kindergartner :) And there is a whole stack of books where this one came from, with titles like My Family and Me, All About Megan, My Mommy's Name is Shawna, and If You Give a Sea Otter a Seashell. It's a treasury of gems from Megan!
Not one to sit on her laurels, though, Megan is still writing away. The assigned portion of this writing project has ended, but she has been filling her spare moments in class plugging away on her final piece, and it's a doozy. It's also a testament to that Catholic education we're paying for. The teachers tell us that it's entitled...wait for it...The Bible, Retold by Megan. Did I mention that Megan is a little confident? Because she is. Just a little. And really cute. You might see this on the back of your next Bible.
